Remembering the valuable words of Mahatma Gandhi, “Hate the sin and not the sinner,” International Film Festival Shimla is going to have an unusual screening of the fourth edition of the film festival at Kanda Jail which is the second venue of the three days international film festival to be held from 12-14th of October 2018 at Gaiety Theater, Shimla. The inauguration of fourth edition of IFFS is scheduled on 11th of October 2018 and the inmates and staff of the Kanda Jail will get a chance to enjoy the special inauguration of the film festival and its screening at the Kanda jail on all three days.
This is for the first time IFFS is having two different venues of the event and the idea behind the second venue is to bridge the gap of the inside world and the outside through cinema, and nurture the creativity of the prisoners. By promoting such activities and involving the jail inmates with the world outside, IFFS intends to motivate the prisoners who are struggling to find their place in the world. In jails they live in isolation from world outside and it adds to depression and fear of getting institutionalized behind the walls and bars of the prison. The problems and troubles inside the jails are different. Most of the prisoners repent each day for what they did on that one particular day and they work hard to get redemption from the crime. Most of them worry about how they are going to survive outside the jails when serving life sentence has actually taken a life out of them. They truly deserve opportunities to explore the outside world and there is no better way than cinema that can show various cultures, glimpse of contemporary society, creative elements of existing lives of people and it can make the inmates revamp their own sense of learning and creativity.
Clad in white uniforms with black stripes, the audience of this event will not be usual one, there will be many of them serving out life sentences for crimes as scary as murders, but we are not expecting a room full of bad people watching the films from various Indian and International film makers, we are looking for a room full of good people who made some bad decisions in their life, watching and understanding the creative, entertaining, and powerful films by the finest film makers of India and abroad.
